Small Business Saturday 2014

Plan to join us again this year on Small Business Saturday (November 29, 2014). Small Business Saturday is an American shopping holiday held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. First observed on November 27, 2010, it is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.

At our farm, customers will be able to SAMPLE lots of our goat's milk cheese and more. We are including other small businesses who sell some of their products in our Farm Store during this event. They will be doing demonstrations and sampling outside the Farm Store that day.

Facebook and website will be updated with full details closer to Small Business Saturday.

Butter Keeper

These are not the commercially made bells for your butter, but instead they have been lovingly made by hand by a NC potter.  They are available in assorted solid and mixed colors of blue, gray, brown and red.  By using this style of butter keeper, you can keep butter at room temperature safely like so many have done since the late 19th century.  The bell will keep the butter fresh and consistently spreadable.

The bell shaped butter keeper comes with a card telling how to use it properly; we also sell the Amish rolled butter that can be used in them!

Available in our farm store!

Stokes County Farm Featured in Flavor, NC Episode

Stokes County Farm Featured in Flavor, NC Episode

Plum Granny Farm, a small USDA Certified Organic Farm, is featured in a new episode of Flavor, NC. Airing on November 14 at 10:00 p.m. (as well as rebroadcasts on November 16 and 17), this episode focuses on the garlic and other specialty crops that farm owners Cheryl Ferguson and Ray Tuegel grow on their farm located just outside of King. The farm is the first in the northern Piedmont to be featured in the series’ three years.

“We are honored to be chosen for this episode,” said Cheryl. “Our approach to the farm has been to grow crops that aren’t typically found in the area and to make them our signature crops. We have been able to do that with specialty crops such as garlic and ginger.” Plum Granny Farm is one of the largest garlic producers in the Piedmont.
In addition to the farm’s profile, the episode also features Lucky 32 Southern Kitchen in Greensboro and its Executive Chef, Jay Pierce. Chef Jay,a regular customer for the farm’s products, prepares four recipes using Plum Granny Farm’s garlic including Barley Risotto, Mushroom and Roasted Garlic Soup and Chimichurri Sauce.
Flavor, NC is a UNC-TV series dedicated to preserving and celebrating North Carolina’s agricultural heritage. Flavor, NC savors the tastes of North Carolina and celebrates the farmers and food artisans working to keep Tar Heel agriculture growing. In every episode, host Lisa Prince takes viewers on a journey across the state to discover a particular Tar Heel favorite. Flavor, NC is written and produced by BlueWater Media, a video production company with offices in Raleigh and Danbury.
Plum Granny Farm, located just south of Hanging Rock State Park, produces garlic, brambles (raspberries and blackberries), ginger and turmeric as well as heirloom and other specialty crops such as asparagus, artichokes, and fingerling potatoes. The farm sells its products at the Cobblestone Old Salem Farmers Market and the King Farmers Market as well as to restaurants and food hubs. Jams and sauces are also available on their website: www.plumgrannyfarm.com.

2013 ADGA ANNUAL MEETING AND CONVENTION IN ASHEVILLE, OCTOBER 12-19, 2013

WE INVITE YOU TO ATTEND THE 2013 ADGA ANNUAL MEETING AND CONVENTION IN ASHEVILLE, OCTOBER 12-19, 2013. Our theme LOOK HOMEWARD ASHEVILLE is geared to help you experience "Coming Home" hospitality our style.

M
any people have been attracted to the mountains of western North Carolina, and have made their homes here. That includes four well-known home places. First, and most important to our Annual Meeting next October is that western North Carolina is home to the American Dairy Goat Association in Spindale, North Carolina. Spindale is 58 miles south of our convention center in downtown Asheville.
The idea for our slogan LOOK HOMEWARD ASHEVILLE comes from an association with the famous writer Thomas Wolfe and his Asheville home where he penned his famous book, Look Homeward Angel. You can visit his home and the famous angel here.
George Vanderbilt built his 250 room home, The Biltmore House, here between 1889 and 1895. It is the largest privately owned home in the United States. Once the estate covered 125,000 acres, it now covers 8,000 acres. Biltmore Forest School was the first forestry education program in the United States. The grounds include 75 acres of formal gardens, a winery and the Inn on Biltmore. It is located in Asheville and well worth a visit.
In Flat Rock, NC, 27 miles south of our convention center, The Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville, is another prized goat enthusiasts destination — The Carl Sandburg Home. The home was gifted to the National Park Service and is exactly as it was the day that Mrs. Sandburg moved out. You can just imagine that the Sandburgs will be back at any moment. Of course, we will be offering an excursion to Mrs. Sandburg's Connemara Farms Goat Dairy that she operated from 1935 to 1965. Her goal was to increase production and that she did. Her award winning Chickaming herd of 200 consisted of Nubians, Saanens and Toggenburgs. The goats you meet when you visit are related to her original herd.
Please check back often, we are adding more information as it becomes available. Also we haven't even mentioned that Asheville holds the title of Beer City, and has a vibrant local food culture, and is nestled in the midst of three national forests.

WNC Cheese Trail Newsletter

Here's your chance to subscribe to the WNC Cheese Trail newsletter! Great opportunity for those of you in and near Western NC to visit the area's greatest cheesemakers or just keep up with what's happening via their newsletter.  Sign up here.

Buffalo Creek Farm and Creamery is not located in the Western Region, but we love keeping up with our friends! Maybe the Piedmont and Eastern part of the state will start their own cheese trail in the future.

Connecting the dots on the Trail...

We've come a long way...

Our region's cheesemakers have once again proven to be among the bravest of souls. For almost a year, a group of committed artisans have held their breath and jumped into a nebulous but consuming task: creating the WNC (Western North Carolina) Cheese Trail.

Now the payoff begins. After a lot of work, the WNCCT has actualized as a network for artisan cheesemakers, a venue for agritourism and a resource for our rich community of farmers and epicureans. We have a website, a fantastic new logo, and we've created the first version of the Official WNCCT Map...not to mention all the legalities that we've crossed off the list! And now our sights are set on developing an interactive digital map alongside a physical printed map for distribution.

Many acclaimed cheesemaking operations in the area were quick to become Cheesemaking Members, and there has been a steady stream of Associate Members joining in support of local artisan foods and gastro-tourism. We hope that plenty more area cheesemakers and food destinations will continue to join the Trail and benefit from this network of passionate food producers.
The Trail's Cheesemaking Members have lent a lot of labor and resources to getting this concept off the ground, and many are shifting their operations in order to accommodate the tourism the Trail will generate.

Here's the Official List of WNC Cheesemaking Members:

Blue Ridge Mountain Creamery...................Fairview

Member Farm Profile:

Yellow Branch Farm
Robbinsville, NC
Bruce DeGroot and Karen Mickler

Yellow Branch has been producing farmstead cheese from Jersey cow milk since 1986. Both their farm and pottery are open for scheduled visits year-round. Here's what they have to say:

"Yellow Branch is very excited about the WNC Cheese Trail. As we begin our 27th year tending the cows and making cheese, growing food for ourselves and our family, we celebrate and are grateful for the growth of the number of cheese makers and facilities in WNC and across the state and nation. In 1986 we were on the cusp of the development of the artisan cheese industry in the United States. Our continued success is in large part due to the flourishing business of folks making delicious cheese which is in great demand. When we started knocking on doors looking for stores to purchase our cheese, we were met with astonishment and a little bit of skepticism since "good" cheeses were considered to be found only in Europe. So here we are today, surrounded by folks making excellent cheese in Western North Carolina and above all, grateful for all who support our endeavors by purchasing and enjoying our products. Thank you!"

www.yellowbranch.com
Again, thank you for sharing an interest in the WNC Cheese Trail. This couldn't exist without the community's hard work and precious input. We hope that the Trail will enable Cheesemaking, Associate and all other Members alike to gain business and connections, and that this network can enrich our craft and spread some of that Western North Carolina talent.

Gratefully yours,

The WNC Cheese Trail

Farm Tour in Western North Carolina

Western NC Farm Tour
Asheville Farm Tour
September 22-23, 2012
Here's your chance to visit farms in the Asheville area that are not normally open to the public. The Farm Tour will open 35 farms in six Western North Carolina counties. The region is home to agriculture of all kinds, ranging from century farms cultivated by the same family for generations, to certified organic farms, to urban gardens.
The self-guided tour, organized by Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP), is your chance to learn how food grows, taste farm-fresh treats, interact with farm animals, and meet the community’s food producers.
It’s the first time ASAP has hosted the event in the fall. The change allows farmers with seasons starting in late summer to take part. But the new season and farms—there are 14 new stops in total—aren’t the only new aspects of the tour.
ASAP plans to launch a brand new local food app, entitled Appalachian Grown and modeled after their Local Food Guide, just before the big event. The free mobile app will be available for iPhone and Android users and offer detailed information about participating farms, as well as tap into a phone’s GPS for help navigating a chosen tour route. Beyond the tour, the app will connect folks with area farms and businesses that support local food. Those interested in test driving the new app will be able to find it post-launch by searching iPhone’s App Store or Android’s Google Play Store for “Appalachian Grown.”
How can tour-takers visit the 35 farms? 1: Purchase a tour pass at select area businesses and tailgate markets, or online at asapconnections.org; passes are $25 in advance. 2) Pack a car with friends and family. One pass admits an entire carload. 3) Grab a guide and set off to celebrate the region’s agricultural heritage. The tour runs 1-6 PM on Saturday and Sunday. Tour guides are available from pass vendors and for download at asapconnections.org; guides include a map and directions, tour tips, information about the second annual Farm Tour Photo Contest, and other details.
Those interested in taking the tour can find more information, including a list of pass vendors and details on volunteering and attending the tour for free, at asapconnections.org. ASAP’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as their community website fromhere.org, will feature event information and stories leading up to the tour. Participants are also invited to share their journey via Twitter during the weekend.
