Centennial Celebration

Parade, Music, Documentary, Highlight City Centennial Celebration
Winston-Salem will celebrate its centennial with four days of activities May 9 – 12 that include a parade, the world premiere of a festive piece for orchestra, a community worship service, the premiere of a centennial documentary, a community toast with a specially brewed “centennial” beer, and more.

The celebrations will begin on Thursday, May 9, which is the 100th anniversary of the day that the consolidation of Winston and Salem into one city took effect. A historic marker will be unveiled on First Street at 6 p.m., followed by a reception and open house in City Hall to view historical displays.

The reception will be followed by the premiere of “Merger: Making the Twin City,” an hour-long documentary produced by WSTV 13 that recounts the origins of Salem and Winston and their tortuous path to consolidation. The film will be shown at A/perture Cinema on Fourth Street at 8:15, 8:45, and 9:15 p.m.

On Friday, May 10, all city residents who are or will be 100 years old in 2013 are invited to a special Centenarian Luncheon at the Benton Convention Center. That evening, the Arts District will host a “Blue Moon” gallery hop. The gallery hop will be augmented by displays of historical artifacts by the Police and Fire departments, music and art by local students, and a free concert by the Vagabond Saints Society from 7 to 10 p.m.

The concert will be preceded by a community toast with a special centennial beer crafted for the occasion by Foothills Brewing, or Primo Water’s “centennial” water.

Old Salem Museums and Gardens will host a free Community Day at Old Salem on Saturday, May 11. In addition to free admission to all Old Salem attractions, visitors will also enjoy colonial crafts, demonstrations of the Tannenberg organ, recitals in the style of 18th century performers, an heirloom puppet show and performances by the Winston-Salem State University Jazz Ensemble.

A centennial parade, featuring marching bands, special floats, and impersonators of historic figures will start at 2 p.m. in Old Salem and march up Main Street into downtown. The parade will conclude at Corpening Plaza, where a party in the plaza will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. featuring vendors and a free concert headlined by Pat "Mother Blues" Cohen.

Also on Saturday, a centennial scavenger hunt in Old Salem and downtown will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., followed by an after party at BB&T Ballpark. Team registrations will be accepted starting March 1.

Sunday, May 12, is the anniversary of the first meeting of the consolidated Board of Aldermen. A non-denominational community worship service and love feast will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the May Dell on the campus of Salem Academy and College. Also Sunday, the Winston-Salem Symphony will perform the world premiere of “Hail the Coming Day,” a festive piece for orchestra composed by Dan Locklair of Wake Forest University in honor of the centennial. The premiere will be part of the symphony’s regular May concerts scheduled for 3 p.m. May 12 and 7:30 p.m. May 14.

The centennial activities were planned by the Centennial Commission, a group of citizens that has been overseeing the city’s 100th birthday celebration. More information about the centennial celebration, including a calendar of events, is available at www.W-S100years.com
Winston-Salem Centennial

Centennial Commission Holding Parade Float Design Competition
The Winston-Salem Centennial Commission and the Winston-Salem Jaycees are encouraging community groups, organizations, businesses and others to enter the float decoration competition for the Centennial Celebration Parade to be held May 11.

Ten winning designs will be selected; each float will depict one decade of Winston-Salem’s first 100 years. Winners will be provided a float base and a $300 allowance to help cover the cost of building and decorating their float. Contestants may contribute additional funds for decorations should they choose.

Entrants should choose the decade they want to depict and submit a description of their proposed float by Feb. 15. Entrants may submit proposals for more than one decade, but a separate entry should be submitted for each decade. A summary of significant events that took place during each decade is available online at the centennial website, http://W-S100years.com.

Entries will be judged based on creativity, historical accuracy, and presentation. To foster collaboration and inclusiveness, special consideration will be given to entries submitted by multiple businesses or organizations working together. Complete contest guidelines, a time table, decade summary, and entry form are available at http://W-S100years.com.

Information about additional ways to participate in the Centennial Celebration Parade will be posted on the centennial website on March 1. The Winston-Salem Jaycees is organizing the Centennial Celebration Parade on behalf of the Winston-Salem Centennial Commission. For more information, call the Jaycees at 776-0690 or send an e-mail to wscentennialparade@gmail.com

Community Garden

An invite from Stokes County Cooperative Extension...
Learn about how your church, school, or other community organization can participate in and benefit from a Community Garden.

You are invited to a luncheon meeting on Tuesday, February 26th, 2012, at 11:30 a.m., at the Agriculture Building (old Wentworth School). Learn best-practices from 2012 Community Gardeners, interact with experienced panelists, meet with Community Garden Coordinator Deborah Crumpton, and plan for your 2013 garden; and learn more about this year’s extra emphasis on school gardens and harvest distribution. We will also have a wonderful local food lunch with food from www.piedmontlocalfood.com !

Community Gardens can help build healthy, local economies, fit bodies, and connected communities. The communities that start gardens can vary. They might include faith communities that donate produce to charities, school gardens that teach science and nutrition with hands-on learning, youth gardens that teach teamwork and entrepreneurial skills, or any other organization that is looking for a worthwhile project to promote health and local goodness!

We are excited about partnering opportunities with organizations and individuals that are interested in Community Gardens. To reserve your spot and local food lunch, please call the Cooperative Extension office at 336.342.8230 or e-mail Melissa_lynch@ncsu.edu

We will have one March 12th and one on April 9th. Chicks will be available by PRE-ORDER ONLY! There are 26 chicken breeds available and 10 duck breeds available to order. Almost all of the chicks & ducks will be available in both females & males. All chicks will come vaccinated for Marek's Disease. We will have door prizes, coupons and refreshments. This is open to ANYONE interested in learning more about poultry.

Artists, nature draw visitors to Stokes County

Artists, Nature Draw Visitors to Stokes County

Thursday, February 7, 2013
With its own mountain range — the Sauratown Mountains — which encompasses 58 miles of the Dan River, an award-winning state park, cascading waterfalls and miles of trails, Stokes County provides daily inspiration for artists. Its towns — Danbury, King and Walnut Cove — have a big appetite for the arts, and the artists often try to capture the beauty of the natural surroundings. The Stokes County Arts Council is celebrating its 35th anniversary and is responsible for much of the cultural activity and entertainment in the county. Painting, photography, pottery, drama and musical performances can easily be found. Take a few hours for yourself to see a play or an exhibit, attend a class or stomp your feet to some bluegrass picking.Just 20 miles north of Winston-Salem, Danbury and the surrounding area provide quick access for visitors looking for a respite. The proximity makes it easy to get away for a few hours.
Outdoor enthusiasts gravitate toward the county’s many interesting destinations such as Moores Springs, Piedmont Springs, Cascade Falls, Tories Den and Hanging Rock State Park. Developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, the park is among North Carolina’s oldest. The 7,049-acre park was named park of the year in 2012 by the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation. Hikers, rock climbers, fisherman and swimmers all find a haven here.
When you are ready to slow down a bit, stroll along the streets of Danbury and Walnut Cove and enjoy the antiques shops. Stop in at J.E. Priddy’s General Store, in operation for 123 years, and take home a souvenir — a country ham, a hoop of cheese, iron cookware or homemade jam.
There’s a lot of history in these hills. Make time to see: the Moratock Iron Furnace, used to produce usable bar iron; Davis Chapel, which started as a place of worship on the James Davis Plantation in the 1700s; and the 100-year-old Jessup Mill and Farm on the Dan River.
For the luxury of spending more than a day in Stokes County, select from among the inns and cabins available — some within earshot of the river.
While the local cuisine is predominantly Southern, country fare, you can still find Mexican, Thai and Japanese food. There is no need to do without sushi, a gourmet cupcake or a fruit smoothie.

Upcoming events:

“Mud & Memories:” Monty Stevens & Monica Marshall in the Apple Gallery, Stokes County Arts Council, 500 N. Main St., 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., through Feb. 19:

“Roadhouse: Where the Rhythms Rock and the Blues Roll,” 7 p.m. March 1 and 2, and 3 p.m. March 3 at the South Stokes High School Auditorium, 1100 South Stokes High Drive, Walnut Cove: This stunning, foot-stomping musical tale of redemption follows the story of Matthew Porter, proprietor of the once famous Blues and Rock & Roll juke joint. Matthew transports the audience back in time to when the Roadhouse was booming. Darryl Van Leer brings to stage live music from the playbooks of Ray Charles, Little Richard, Elton John, Sam Cooke, Muddy Waters, Jelly Roll Morton, Big Joe Turner, Lionel Richie and Jerry Lee Lewis. Dessert is served one hour before the performance. Tickets are $14, $12 for seniors 60 and older, and $10 for Stokes Arts members and students 18 and under. Last week we found this quiet, sweet boy roaming near the farm.  He had a collar (no tags) and did not have a microchip either. Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue housing him in hopes of finding his owners or a new forever home.  If you recognize him or would like to be his Valentine, contact them today!

Carolina Great Pyrenees Rescue is a non-profit based out of Winston-Salem, NC that works to rescue and rehome abandoned and abused Pyrs in North and South Carolina. They are a volunteer-based organization who advocates for the breed and educates others about the proper care of these “gentle giants.”
