Blueberry Goat Cheese Tarts Recipe

Our local paper, The Winston-Salem Journal, asked readers to send in their favorite "red, white, and blue" recipes.  We suggested this Blueberry Goat Cheese Tarts recipe.

Since we make and sell farmstead goat cheeses on our farm in North Carolina, we enjoy this tart recipe because it uses goat cheese! Also during the July 4th holiday, we always have an abundance of fresh blueberries and can purchase strawberries locally if our plants have already stopped producing.  The tarts are a simple dessert to prepare, and the recipe is below.

Check out the food editor, Michael Hastings, and his article A feast for the fourth: Readers offer up their recipes for a tasty celebration for more great recipes!

Readers' Favorite Fourth Recipes

Blueberry Goat Cheese Tarts

Makes 8 to 12 tarts

2 to 3 sheets of puff pastry
1 cup goat cheese (or cream cheese, or a combination)
¼ cup honey
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon vanilla
½ teaspoon dried thyme
1 pint fresh blueberries, rinsed
Powdered sugar for sprinkling
Sliced strawberries (optional)

1. Mix goat cheese, honey, thyme, lemon juice and vanilla, and then fold in the fresh blueberries.

2. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a baking sheet (or two) with cooking spray. Cut a sheet of puff pastry into quarters, each about 4-by-4 inches. Fold each side of each quarter of puff pastry in to make a ledge all the way around and place on a sprayed baking sheet. Add some of the filling to each piece of puff pastry. Repeat until all filling is used.

3. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and top with a few sliced strawberries, if desired.

Good Food Weekend!
Old Salem Cobblestone Farmers Market and LaLa

One of the best parts of visiting the Cobblestone Farmers Market is the ability to ask the farmers and producers questions about their products: "What variety is this?" "How do you cook it?" ... and never having to ask "Was this freshly picked?". While every market day is a celebration of the good food movement, this Sunday is the LaLa, an extra special day for good music and good food to come together.
For more information, check out:
-The
article in today's Winston-Salem Journal Relish section
- The
radio interview on Triad Arts Weekend with David Ford
Tickets will be available at the $10 advance ticket price at the market's information booth or

Holly Creek Girls and Woody Pines @ Jessup Mill

Cover PhotoSaturday, July 20, 2013 at 8:00pm

Local favorites, The Holly Creek Girls play an eclectic, energetic mix of original Americana and classic country hits. Two-time winners of the Winston-Salem Shuffle for their original songs, The Holly Creek Girls project all the fun they're having on stage to their audience - the result is a show filled with great energy.

The band (Terri Flagg, Monty O’Brien, John Hartman and Julia Bailey) covers everything from Dolly Parton to The Grateful Dead, with tributes to Gillian Welch and Ray LaMontaigne in between.

Cover PhotoSaturday, July 27, 2013 at 8:00pm

One of our favorite showmen, Woody Pines, returns to Jessup Mill this summer with a new CD!

Woody’s latest album, Rabbits Motel, brings in a bit more of a country feel than his previous one, with some electric instruments you wouldn’t see in a jug band. Some tracks bring in a full studio sound that leaves the street corner behind, but opens up rich new possibilities. Still thoroughly grounded in the blues and rags of before, this album adopts a touching lyricism and an independent streak that brings to mind Iron and Wine, among others.

One can only imagine what will be next for Woody Pines after this album, but without a doubt there will be more touring, more old songs made new, and more new songs that sound straight out of your granddad’s 45s. Woody has established himself at the forefront of a generation of musicians who are reminding us what great music is, all over again.

2013 ADGA ANNUAL MEETING AND CONVENTION IN ASHEVILLE, OCTOBER 12-19, 2013

WE INVITE YOU TO ATTEND THE 2013 ADGA ANNUAL MEETING AND CONVENTION IN ASHEVILLE, OCTOBER 12-19, 2013. Our theme LOOK HOMEWARD ASHEVILLE is geared to help you experience "Coming Home" hospitality our style.

M
any people have been attracted to the mountains of western North Carolina, and have made their homes here. That includes four well-known home places. First, and most important to our Annual Meeting next October is that western North Carolina is home to the American Dairy Goat Association in Spindale, North Carolina. Spindale is 58 miles south of our convention center in downtown Asheville.
The idea for our slogan LOOK HOMEWARD ASHEVILLE comes from an association with the famous writer Thomas Wolfe and his Asheville home where he penned his famous book, Look Homeward Angel. You can visit his home and the famous angel here.
George Vanderbilt built his 250 room home, The Biltmore House, here between 1889 and 1895. It is the largest privately owned home in the United States. Once the estate covered 125,000 acres, it now covers 8,000 acres. Biltmore Forest School was the first forestry education program in the United States. The grounds include 75 acres of formal gardens, a winery and the Inn on Biltmore. It is located in Asheville and well worth a visit.
In Flat Rock, NC, 27 miles south of our convention center, The Crowne Plaza Resort in Asheville, is another prized goat enthusiasts destination — The Carl Sandburg Home. The home was gifted to the National Park Service and is exactly as it was the day that Mrs. Sandburg moved out. You can just imagine that the Sandburgs will be back at any moment. Of course, we will be offering an excursion to Mrs. Sandburg's Connemara Farms Goat Dairy that she operated from 1935 to 1965. Her goal was to increase production and that she did. Her award winning Chickaming herd of 200 consisted of Nubians, Saanens and Toggenburgs. The goats you meet when you visit are related to her original herd.
Please check back often, we are adding more information as it becomes available. Also we haven't even mentioned that Asheville holds the title of Beer City, and has a vibrant local food culture, and is nestled in the midst of three national forests.
