The Malcolm Blue Historical Crafts and Farmskills Festival

The Malcolm Blue Historical Crafts and Farmskills Festival
Friday through Sunday, September 27 - 29, 2013

The Malcolm Blue Historical Crafts and Farmskills Festival is a three-day festival held annually the last weekend of September. As many as 1,500 school school children visit the farm on Friday during School Children’s Day to learn what daily life and work was like in the 19th century. Some of the crafts and skills demonstrated are pottery, basket making, woodworking, blacksmithing, spinning, weaving, soap and candle making and fringe tying.

Farm animals fill the stable; pony and wagon rides are available for the young and young at heart. Folk and country musicians and dancers entertain during the three-day event. In the meadow, Civil War reenactment troops are encamped and steam engines are demonstrated. The festival has become one of the finest intergenerational events in North Carolina.

If you are interested in becoming a crafter/demonstrator at the festival, please visit the crafter/demonstrator page.

The Carper Family

Cover PhotoSaturday, August 31, 2013 at 8:00pm

The Carper Family is a family band like no other, spinning out the effortless harmonies of a born-family with the range and diversity of a made-family. Whatever the bloodline, the music hits the ear with both depth and simplicity, capturing the essence of true country music. The Austin-based trio of Melissa Carper [upright bass], Beth Chrisman [fiddle], and Jenn Miori [guitar] applies their signature, stunning three-part harmonies to bluegrass, old-time, country and swing tunes of the standard and origi...nal variety, pushing and honoring American musical traditions at every step.

In the last few years, the Carper’s rise has impressed and entertained audiences and their fellow musicians all over the place. They’ve shared stages with any number of country notables, including steel-guitar master Cindy Cashdollar, West Virginia’s Ginny Hawker, and Kansas City fiddle legend, Betse Ellis. And, like any country band worth its salt, they tour hard, crisscrossing North America and Europe to play gigs at festivals from Alaska to Norway.

Edible City: Grow the Revolution

Edible City: Grow the Revolution -  Food Movement documentary showing Tuesday, August 13

The film "Edible City: Grow the Revolution" a fast-paced documentary journey through the good food movement that has begun to spread across the country and around the world a free showing of the 70-minute documentary  will be held on Tuesday, August 13, at 7:00 p.m. at The Enterprise Conference Center, 1922 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Winston-Salem.

It is also the kick off for Foodways & Roadways participation in the documentary's nationwide grassroots campaign to provide solutions to problems within the existing food systems.

"Edible City" tells the stories of a diverse cast of extraordinary and sometimes eccentric people who are doing something revolutionary to transform their communities by creating healthy, sustainable local food systems.   The film explores how people are digging in the dirt to create transformative work that ranges from edible education to grassroots activism to building local economies.  Inspirational, down-to-earth and a bit quirky, "Edible City" captures the spirit of a movement that's making real change and doing something truly revolutionary.

As part of the evening's program, Dr. William Randle, dean of the North Carolina A&T University School of Agriculture and Environmental Science, and Odile Hutchette, professor and director of A&T's Reid Greenhouse, will describe the university's new undergraduate Urban and Community Horticulture Program and the future Urban and Community Food Complex at the A&T Farm.  Additionally, Santos Flores, the coordinator of Seeds Durham Inner-City Gardeners will share how that program empowers teens by teaching organic gardening, sound business practices, healthy food choices and food security values.  The program was a 2013 winner of The Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Award which honors organizations working to transform communities through healthy food access as well as social and economic justice.

The Wake Forest School of Medicine Translational Science Institute, the S. G. Atkins Community Development Corporation and North Carolina A&T State University School of Agriculture & Environmental Science are sponsoring the film showing and discussion.  These three organizations also are involved in improving community health by providing access to healthier food through the development of urban and community horticulture in Winston Salem.

"Edible City" is the third and last film in the Foodways & Roadways Documentary Film Series, which is a joint effort between the Translational Science Institute and the Wake Forest University's documentary film program. Foodways & Roadways also has chronicled the changing food environment in Winston-Salem the last few decades.

Annual Tomato and Vegetable Field Day

Annual Tomato and Vegetable Field Day

Date and Time: Thursday, August 8, 2013 starting at 12:30 pm
Location: Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Station, 74 Research Drive, Mills River, NC 28759.
For More Information: Contact Jeanine Davis at Jeanine_Davis@ncsu.edu or 828-684-3562

Western North Carolina is well known for producing high quality tomatoes, sweet corn, cucumbers, peppers, and other vegetables. Agricultural scientists with NC State University provide support to these growers by developing new varieties and researching the best practices to grow safe, nutritious vegetables that can yield a profit for the farmer while protecting our mountain soil and water. To help diversify agriculture in the region, they are also exploring potential new crops such as hops for the craft breweries and medicinal herbs for the natural products industry. The field day will open with a trade show, tomato taste test, and registration. Participants will then tour the research station on event trailers (with comfortable seats and protection from the sun). The event will conclude with a pig pickin’ at 6:00 pm at Lake Julian (about 10 minutes away). The field day will take place regardless of the weather, so dress accordingly. This is a free event sponsored by NC State University, the NC Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, the NC Tomato Growers Association, and the industry.

Directions to the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Station: From I-40 in Asheville, take I-26 South (Exit 46). Travel approximately 9 miles to Hwy 280 (Exit 40). Follow Hwy 280 South approximately 2 miles to Ferncliff Park Drive on the right. Turn right onto Ferncliff Park Drive (used to be Old Fanning Bridge Rd.). At the entrance to Ferncliff Park, turn left onto Old Fanning Bridge Road. Cross the river and turn right onto Research Drive. IF THERE IS A ROAD CLOSED SIGN AT FERNCLIFF PARK DR., FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW.

Revised temporary directions to the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Station: Construction of the Sierra Nevada Brewery near our facilities resulted in a temporary road closure. Old Fanning Bridge Road at Hwy NC-280 has been renamed to Ferncliff Park Drive. If that road is still closed on the Hwy NC-280 side at the time of the field day, people coming in from I-26 should follow these directions: continue south on Hwy NC-280 past Ferncliff Park Drive. At the third light, turn right on Hwy NC-191 (Old Haywood Road). Go several miles and turn right on Old Fanning Bridge Road.

Research Stops:
• Incidence and Persistence of Salmonella & Escherichia coli in Environmental Samples from North Carolina Tomato Production Systems
• Tomato Taste Test: Ensuring Good Flavor in New Varieties
• Sweet Corn Yields from a Long Term Tillage & Production Management Experiment
• Effects of Organic and Conventional Production Systems under Conservation and Conventional Tillage on Water Quality
