NC State College of Veterinary Medicine's Tours

The NC State College of Veterinary Medicine's (CVM) mission is to provide high-quality veterinary medical education, conduct state-of-the-art biomedical research, and provide diagnostic and therapeutic services. Our distinctive facilities, as well as the broad expertise of the faculty and veterinary medical staff of the college, present unique opportunities to foster and encourage students of North Carolina to consider careers in science or veterinary medicine. As such, the CVM is pleased to offer tours to elementary students through the Office of Continuing Education & Outreach. Tours will be composed of three segments: 1.A tour through the CVM Teaching Animal Unit - this segment will allow students to go on a walking tour of the live animal production facility that raises farm animals for the purpose of teaching veterinary students. Most common farm animal species raised in North Carolina will be visible, and they will change seasonally. This portion of the tour will be weather-permitting. 2.A visit to the Anatomy Lab - this segment will show students interesting anatomical models, discuss how domestic species are alike and different, and answer questions from the group (presentations will vary according to the age/grade or particular interests of the group). 3.A discussion of careers in veterinary medicine/science - this segment is designed to demonstrate the wide range of exciting career opportunities available to those who get a degree in veterinary medicine. Tours of the college will be offered each Wednesday from 9:00 - 11:00am There will be a maximum of 30 students and a minimum of 15 allowed on each tour. In addition, we require that there be a minimum of one adult for every five children in grades 4 & 5, and one adult for every four children in grades K-3. One major concern is the safety of the visitors as well as that of the animals. Children visiting the Teaching Animal Unit will be provided with shoe covers and will not come in direct contact with animals. Any adult/student who has visited a foreign country within the previous month will not be allowed to tour the animal facilities. There is no charge to schools for visiting the CVM. To request a tour, please call us at 919-513-6421.
