Courses for the Community

Salem College starts its "Courses for Community" fall program, which is designed to provide you with a place to engage in the exchange of ideas, to learn the how-to's of life, and to meet other people who share some of your interests. The fall session starts in August and will run through November, with a variety of courses.

Drawing Animal Friends for Young Artists [Verano]
Young artists will learn to capture the spirit of their favorite animals by guided instruction on the how-tos of drawing eyes, mouths, fur, whiskers and more! Students will enjoy lessons for shading, drawing basic shapes and creating textures for their cuddly creatures. Bring to class: reference photos, drawing tablet, #2 pencil, eraser and a colored pencil set.

Drawing Animal Portraits for Teens to Adults [Verano]

Learn the practical approach to drawing through step-by-step demonstrations, and capture the likeness of your favorite animal. Students will explore the use of cross-hatching, blending, lifting (reverse drawing), shading and much more. With practice and guidance, your animal portraits will come alive. Bring to class: drawing tablet, eraser, a set of charcoal pencils and drawing pencils #2, 2B, 3B, 4B. Reference pictures of your favorite animals are recommended.

Holiday Painting Workshop: Antique Snowman and Rooster Paintings - Option III [Verano]
Create two decorative pieces of artwork, one snowman and one rooster, for your enjoyment or gift-giving this Christmas season. By using water-soluble oils and the same fun techniques used in the angel and Santa paintings, students of all ages will enjoy this project. Bring a friend or come ready to meet new people, and settle into a fun-filled evening that is sure to spread the Christmas cheer. Bring to class: (2 ) 11 x 14 flat canvas panels, (1) tube each- burnt sienna and raw umber (water-soluble oil paints), an old t-shirt and Q-tips. Protective gloves, a variety of snowman and rooster patterns and additional paint supplies are provided.

Home Orchid Growing [Bare]
Orchids seem exotic and full of mystery, but many are easily grown in the home with proper understanding of their culture. This course will cover the basics of home orchid growing and prepare students for a lifetime of enjoyment with these marvelous flowers
