Stokes Cooperative Extension to Present Cut Flower Production Workshop
Would you like to learn to grow flowers and make extra money on the weekends? With just a little bit of garden space you can start a new business. If this sounds intriguing, plan to join us on Thursday March 14 from 1:00 -5:00 at the Cooperative Extension office in Danbury for a workshop on Cut Flower Production.
This is a 4 hour workshop for those interested in learning the basics of specialty cut flower production for small acreage. Topics to be discussed include production systems, plant materials, marketing strategies and postharvest handling. The cost of the workshop is $15.00.
Instructors for this special event will be Cooperative Extension agents Craig Adkins and Der Xiong- both based in Catawba County.
Craig Adkins is an Area Specialized Agent, assisting nursery growers, greenhouse operators, and landscapers in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, McDowell and Wilkes Counties. He provides technical assistance on Integrated Pest Management, marketing, record keeping, personnel and operations management, alternative enterprises, production systems, and post-harvest handling. He also conducts field research to improve production practices. He has been employed with NC State University for over 30 years (7 in Department of Plant Pathology; 23 plus with NC Cooperative Extension). Craig has BS and MS degrees from NC State University in Horticultural Science.
Der Xiong is the Immigrant Agriculture Program Coordinator for the Catawba County Cooperative Extension Center. She teaches Hmong farmers in Catawba and surrounding counties about sustainable and profitable techniques to help them further their farming operations. Her family owns a cut flower farm in Catawba County which has sold directly to consumers, wholesalers, and retailers for over 9 years.
